A shortage of workers has caused frequent delays for the building of 14 tsunami relief houses at Ta’anga in ‘Eua, at the resettlement area for some of the tsunami-affected families from Mango, Ha’apai. The skulls of two Tongan ancestors, collected in the Pacific in the 19th Century, and repatriated to Tonga by the Australian Museum this week, were given a respectful traditional burial on ‘Eua Island in the presence of King Tupou VI and members of the Royal Family on January 10. The funeral conducted by the royal undertakers, the Nima Tapu (sacred hands), at Kolomaile, ‘Eua, was attended by descendants of the ‘Ata people, some of them coming from abroad. The funeral tributes touched upon painful memories of the loss of half of the ‘Ata population to Australian blackbirders in 1863. The surviving population of ‘Ata was relocated to ‘Eua by Tupou I.

A first Tropical Cyclone advisory was issued at noon today, March 2, for Tropical Cyclone Kevin, a category 1 storm that may enter southern Tongan waters late on Sunday, 9 March, if it stays on its forecast track. It follows TC Judy (Cat. 3). Judy is forecast to pass further to the south on Saturday and is not likely to pose any direct threat to Tonga except for the Tele-ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau coastal waters.

Two fishermen whose fibre boat suffered engine failure at sea were rescued by Tonga Police at Ha’aluma Beach in ‘Eua on Saturday, 15 October, a few hours after they failed to return home. The boat had no communications, no life jackets and beacon. Tonga Police urged the public and sea farers to make sure their boats are appropriately equipped with means of communication, life jackets, a beacon and enough food supplies.
