The person who had tested a weak positive for COVID-19 after arriving on a repatriation flight from Christchurch last Wednesday night, has tested negative for COVID-19 in a second test done on Monday, November 1, confirmed Ministry of Health Dr Siale ‘Akau’ola today. “This is good for his family and this person because the weight of the country must have been on him and the difficulty that he was in.”

Tonga's COVID positive case in quarantine is not showing any symptoms, because the passenger was previously vaccinated, the Minister of Health said yesterday, as first doses of vaccines reached 89% of eligible adults in Tonga. So far 63% of the eligible adult population are fully vaccinated, after the weekend rush boosted the numbers.

Tonga is returning 10,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines to COVAX today so they can be given to Vietnam before the expiry date. The Ministry of Health is disappointed that unvaccinated people have been slow to take up these doses. So far less than 30% of the total population has been vaccinated. The ministry said it is not easy to get the vaccines and now they are trying to get more. Around 31,600 doses of the Pfizer vaccine will arrive in Tonga next week but these are for 12 to 17-year-olds and pregnant women.

Meanwhile, the Health CEO Dr Siale ‘Akau'ola urged young people (18-29 years) throughout Tonga to hurry up and get their vaccinations because COVID-19 can reach Tonga. “If you get the vaccine while there is a COVID outbreak, it’s too late. There will be hundreds of lives lost,” he warned.

American Samoa recorded its first COVID-19 case this month, after a resident who returned from Honolulu on September 13 tested positive for the virus. Only 7 countries in the world remain COVID-19 free to date. They include Tonga, Kiribati, Micronesia, Tuvalu, Nauru, North Korea and Turkmenistan. Four other dependencies or territories in the Pacific - Tokelau, Niue, Pitcairn Island, and Cook Islands - also remain COVID-19 free.

Another 897 Tongans received their first shots and 51 received their second doses of COVID-19 vaccine, for the week September 10-16, after the Ministry of Health urged the 16,352 unvaccinated people in the targeted age groups to hurry up and get their shots this month before the vaccines expire. Tonga's Ministry of Health today urged those aged 18 – 29 years to get their COVID-19 vaccinations, after it was revealed the age group had the lowest inoculation rate at 38% compared to older people. The Minister said they needed to speed up the vaccinations in order to resume the repatriations to Tonga. “The return of these people depends on how good our vaccination rate is. And if we take it slow just because no one here has the virus, they will continue to suffer.”

A consignment of 36,800 AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses, funded by Japan, and provided by COVAX, arrived in Tonga on an AIr New Zealand cargo flight last night, 25 August. "While I sincerely hope that Tonga could maintain its COVID-free society, after fully getting vaccinated, we will have to reconsider our border restrictions so that we could get along with other countries," said the Japanese ambassador to Tonga.
