Editor,
In 1984, I had the privilege of meeting the Hon. Tasi Fakafanua at the Otago University in Dunedin. I was a student with Youth With A Mission and we were staying in Oamaru. I hitchhiked down to Dunedin and I met him through mutual friends.
When I met Tasi, he was in law school. He was the most gracious and kind person, and when I prepared to leave, he honored me with a large piece of tapa cloth.
When I returned to the States, Tasi and I exchanged a few letters and I still have the birth announcement for his first child, HRH Sinaitakala. It is a treasured possession like that sheet of cloth.
His memory has stayed with me for almost 40 years, as has my love for Tonga. I hope to visit one day before I am too old.
Sincerely,
