The funeral of Thomas Spencer Monson, the 16th President and a Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who died on 2 January 2018 at his home in Salt Lake City, will be held next week and televised live for 19 LDS Stakes in Tonga.

The new year welcomed seven beautiful new babies in Tonga, with six born at Vaiola Hospital on Tongatapu and one at Prince Ngu Hospital, Vava’u. The first, arriving bright and early, was Herschel Tiuke Duane Miller Jr Pola. Only two of the new babies were girls. They are among the first of an estimated 385,793 babies born on New Year's Day around the world.

King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau'u and members of the Royal Family welcomed guests at a New Year's Day reception at the Royal Palace, Nuku'alofa today. Among the guests were rugby league star Jason Taumalolo and Grammy nominee Josh Tatofi.

A memorial service was held outside the New Zealand town of Gisborne on Chistmas Eve to pay tribute to the victims of a bus crash that killed three Tongan visitors last year. The memorial marks a year since the tragic accident occurred.

As government offices closed for the holidays Christmas cheer was spread in Nuku’alofa today by brass bands from Tonga Police and His Majesty's Armed Forces.

The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints has established a new stake in Tonga, the Nuku'alofa Tonga Capital Stake, opened with a ceremony on 19 November at the ‘Atele Indoor Stadium.

Tonga will host the 2018 Miss Pacific Islands pageant, which is usually held around the first week of December.

A donation of $5100 pa’anga was made to the Alonga Adult Disabled Centre, at Pea on December 8. Tongan artist Uili Lousi collaborated with the New Zealand High Commissioner HE Sarah Walsh in this initiative and presented the cheque to Lavinia Satini, the center’s coordinator with residents present. The amount was raised from the sales of artwork by Lousi.
