A New Zealand company is set to privatize and renovate the Lupepau’u airport in Vava’u, however, no further information regarding the company was revealed by the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. Samiu Vaipulu, at a Press Conference with local media today.

Invitations from the Speaker Lord Fakafanua has been sent to all elected representatives to the Legislative Assembly, calling for submission of nomination of a candidate for Prime Minister Designate. Nomination(s) are submitted to the office of the Speaker, and will close at 4.30pm, on Monday, 23 December.

Tonga’s Prime Minister Hon. Hu’akavameiliku (Siaosi Sovaleni) has resigned this morning, at the end of an emotional speech to parliament, ahead of a Motion for a vote of no Confidence that was expected to be tabled in parliament today. “I think Tonga has been through a lot, don’t need to put them through another vote and all that, so I might as well just resign and provide some kind of support moving forward,” he told Matangi Tonga.

A Motion for a Vote of No Confidence against the Prime Minister, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni (Hon. Hu'akavameiliku) and the Prime Minister’s response, will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly of Tonga next week on Tuesday, 3 December, 2024, the Office of the Legislative Assembly confirmed in a statement last night.

An intention to move a Motion for a Vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister, Hon. Hu'akavameiliku (Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni) was submitted by Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Eke in a group of 10 members of parliament, on Saturday, 23 November, the Lord Speaker's office confirmed this morning.

The Legislative Assembly of Tonga passed the National Annual Budget amounting to $899.2 million pa’anga for the financial year 2024-2025, last night, 26 June. The Appropriation Act with amendments for the 2024/25 Financial Year was passed with a vote of 21-0, following its third reading in the Assembly.

In the Legislative Assembly today, 18 June, the Government financial statements for the year ending 23 June 2023 were passed down to be discussed in the Whole House Committee together with the budget estimates 2024/2025.
