HM King Tupou VI today reminded voters that, "Economically, there is much to do in the near future, so vote wisely in this coming election.” HIs royal address, read to the House, concluded the 2021-2025 parliamentary term ahead of the general election to be held on 20 November.
The King was not present but had his speech delivered by three nobles of the realm. Lord Tu’i’afitu read the royal address, accompanied by Lord Ve’ehala and Lord Luani, in a brief soft closing ceremony today, 23 October, at Parliament House in Nuku'alofa.
In His address, the King acknowledged the Cabinet, the Nobles, and the People's Representatives, noting that after the election, there was still much to be done.
“The work of the Legislative Assembly and the government is important to be in accord with the Constitution and the law.”
King Tupou VI urged the House to uphold the Tongan culture.
Addressing MPs behaviour, the King noted, “My wish is that religion and education are embodied, and actions demonstrate respect, humility, cooperation and the fulfillment of mutual obligations, and loyalty.”
Overseas opportunities
The King noted there are many opportunities overseas but Tongans must meet international requirements, "workers need to be able to speak and read in English."
“This is important for us. Our workers must be equipped to meet the requirements of foreign countries.”
"Economically, there is much to do in the near future, so vote wisely in this coming election,” he noted before wishing the House all the best.
