I am not sure how many economists with a knowledge of Tonga'’s economy can share your views in your Editorial Comments on 14 Sep 2006, of the above title Tupou IV led Tonga toward a modern economy. I certainly do not, but I realise you were operating from a different set of assumptions, so I will not be making extensive comments on your Editorial. - Apelu Tielu

I wanted to share with you my first meeting with the late King of Tonga. I was so humbled to see the King come out to meet the Tongan community in his pajamas and slippers. He actually met and shook the hands of everyone that was present there, all the children and adults, some 50 people altogether. I will forever remember this occasion because it showed what humility and simplicity meant. -Dr. Henry Ivarature

Casket King Tupou IV

Nuku'alofa, Tonga
The funeral of Tonga's King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, the first of a Tongan monarch in 41 years, today presented to the world a vivid picture of Tonga in the first decade of the 21st century.

The new King, George Tupou V, in full uniform as the Chief in Command of the Tonga Defence Service, with his soldiers, commanded the dignified funeral service, with civilians uniformly clad in black carrying out all the religious and cultural activities. The West and its Western media need to be educated on some aspects of Tongan culture so they can be enlightened regarding our rituals and the relationship of Tongans with their beloved King. It is rude and highly inappropriate that during our time of mourning, offensive articles and news by some Western newspapers, radio personalities and television are mocking the late King and His Majesty Tupou V. - Loketi Niua Latu

I was first appalled and outraged by the very insensitive and disrespectful remarks by Mr. Laws concerning our beloved Monarch His Late Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. However, I now find it rather amusing how Mr. Laws has exposed his ignorance and bigotry for all to see.
