Tonga's government is embarking on a reform program "to change people’s mind-sets", the Prime Minister, Hon. ‘Akilisi Pohiva told a Press Conference that he called on March 29 at the Fa‘onelua Convention Centre in Nuku'alofa. He also said that government is preparing a bill that will allow district and town officers to appropriate "deserted" properties and clear them for community use.

An 18 month long project to support the development of the vanilla industry in Vava'u this year has also helped Tonga's MAFF and Australian development partners to better understand the challenges and opportunities faced by vanilla growers and the vanilla industry. Over 100 vanilla growers were directly assisted and 328 plantations monitored under the project, which has identified a need for new plantings, particularly on small family plantations.

A four-year-old boy died at Prince Ngu Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, November 22 after being hit by a vehicle on Maiva Road in Hihifo, Vava’u. It is alleged that the boy had been left unattended in a parked vehicle before the accident.

Tonga's Police are remaining tight-lipped today, over how an accused murder suspect Dean Jay Fletcher managed to escape their custody yesterday and flee on his yacht 'Sea Oak'. He has not been recaptured and was last seen heading out of Tongan waters. It is alleged he beat his wife to death while visiting Vava'u.

Amid a continuing fuel crisis in Tonga's northern islands of Vava'u, where petrol shortages have continued for weeks, the government issued a statement today telling consumers that the supply disruption for petrol in Vava'u "is directly due to delays experienced by Pacific Energy in its replacement of the normal Local Costal Tanker with a bigger vessel."
