Bullying and mob violence have no place in any civilised society, a judge said yesterday in sending three former Tupou College students to lengthy prison terms for their part in a violent attack on a home in Tofoa that severely injured a young man on 18 July 2013.

Twenty-four Tupou College students and two adults have been charged with serious criminal offences, including attempted murder, attempted arson, grievous bodily harm, and bodily harm, in relation to a violent attack at a home in Tofoa last year. 123 others were sentenced on February 3, after pleading guilty to lesser charges.

A 41-year-old truck driver has been charged with two counts in relation to the student attack on a home in Tofoa on July 18. The accused, who is alleged to have helped transport the students from Tupou College, is remanded in police custody.

A total of 150 accused, including 147 students from Tupou College and three adults, have been charged in relation to the violent attack at a home in Tofoa on July 18. A new charge of unlawful assembly has been filed against each of the accused who have all been released on bail until October.

Twenty-two of the Tupou College accused who remain in police custody today have been variously charged with trespassing, housebreaking and causing grievous bodily harm. One student has been charged with attempted arson, while a Tupou College teacher and a bus driver have been charged with aiding criminal damage and are remanded in custody.

The escalation in student violence is a major crisis for the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, its General Secretary Rev. Dr Tevita Havea, said today, and suggested that closing the rival boarding schools of ‘Atele and Toloa for ten years might be a way forward for the schools and the country.

Charges have been laid against 147 accused students and ex-students from Tupou College, who have each been charged with one count of conspiracy to commit willful damage to a building in regards to an attack at a home in Tofoa on Thursday night, July 18. Tonga Police said 75 were released on bail to July 29, while 72 accused remained in custody. New charges may be laid later.
