A tropical cyclone warning for Niuatoputapu has been been cancelled this evening and replaced with a strong wind warning as Tropical Cyclone Tuni moves away from Tonga’s northern islands. Telephone services for the remote Niuas are currently disrupted by the windy conditions.

On its current track Tropical Cyclone Tuni is expected to lie 180km east of Niuatoputapu at 07:00pm this evening, the Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre advised at 10:00am Sunday 29 November 2015. The next advisory will be issued at 1:00pm.

The Prime Minister, Hon. ‘Akilisi Pohiva this afternoon, at a Press Conference, sentenced Hon. ‘Etuate Lavulavu for corruption by terminating his ministerial post as Minister of Infrastructure but retained him as Minister of Tourism without pay for five months as from January 2016. No questions were allowed.

Wind power energy may be the next big source of renewable energy, after solar energy, to help reduce Tonga’s heavy reliance on diesel for power generation. Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is preparing to carry out a six-months feasibility study on wind power.
