Five Tongan workers including a father and son have been killed in a horrific car crash near Tauranga in New Zealand last night. New Zealand Police said that at about 8:10pm on August 2 a northbound vehicle pulled out of a side road onto State Highway 2 near Katikai and was struck by a southbound logging truck and trailer. The victims have been named as Halani Fine, Koli Vaipulu, Sitiveni Vaipulu, Sione Teulaka, and Samuela Taukatelata.

Pita Taufatofua, Tonga’s first Olympic Taekwondo athlete, will aim for gold at the Rio Olympics competing in the Men’s +80kg division on Saturday 20 August. A lifetime of pain and struggle was worth every moment to reach the Olympics, says Pita when reflecting on his journey to becoming an Olympian. It cost him six broken bones, three torn ligaments, three months in a wheelchair, a year and a half on crutches and hundreds of hours of physiotherapy, and he has no regrets.

Tongan Olympian Karoline Lusitania Tatafu (18) aims to perform to the best of her ability and not let the atmosphere overwhelm her at the Rio Olympic that opens in four days time. Lusi hopes to achieve a personal best score and get through the first elimination round. Getting to the Olympics is no easy task and being self-funded meant Lusi's family has supported her and continues to support her providing 80% of costs so she can represent Tonga. She gave up her studies to train.

A pregnant 30 year-old US-Tongan woman and mother of six, ‘Ofa Kinikini, died after the vehicle she was traveling in was hit by a train in Salt Lake City, Utah on Monday July 25. ‘Ofa's baby was saved in an emergency C-section, a daughter who is now in critical condition, according to local reports.
