The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Mr. Henry Puna, said China's security offering for the upcoming 53rd Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting to be held in Tonga from 26 - 30 August, this year, is not an issue for the Pacific. “This issue is a lot more complicated," he said, while warning the Pacific not be hindered by the “outsiders’ geo-political games”. Tonga will host the the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meetings from 26 - 30 August, 2024 in Nuku'alofa, with the theme "Transformative Resilient Pasifiki; Build Better Now." Last night, HRH Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala unveiled the Government's chosen theme and logo at a special launch event attended by the Forum Secretary General Mr Henry Puna, at the Fa'onelua Convention Center, in Nuku'alofa.

A man charged with two counts that included the theft of a vehicle from the Vaiola Hospital car park was found not guilty, although there was evidence that he was a passenger in the stolen car. The Supreme Court judge stated that two of the Crown witnesses 'Miki" Taulaki and Moala 'Ikani should have instead been charged with the offences.

Tonga's Customs officials have seized 137.36 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia that were concealed in a metal drum containing personal items, and intercepted at a customs warehouse in Ma'ufanga on 4 April. They were consigned to a 45 year old Tongan female from Kolofo'ou, Tongatapu, who has been apprehended.

Kelekolio Fonua (23) and Andy Fukofuka (38) were jailed for charges that included serious housebreaking, theft and receiving stolen goods worth $15,403 from Tupou High School at Nukunuku. Alcohol and illicit drug abuse have been a feature of life for both men. Fukofuka had breached a suspended sentence. A probation report said, “he does not support his community and is a malign presence”.
