The Tonga National Rugby League Board (TNRL) was suspended by the Rugby League International Federation Board (RLIF) in a decision made last night, 26 September. As a result, Australia’s NRL announced they would withdraw an invitation for a TNRL team to play in the World Cup 9s to be held in October.

Tonga National Rugby League Board (TNRLB) confirmed at a press conference in Nuku’alofa this afternoon Mate Ma’a Tonga Coach Kristian Woolf was let go on Wednesday 4 September. Mate Ma’a Tonga with Kristian Woolf as coach reached the semi-finals at the Rugby League World Cup in 2017, the highest achievement ever reached by a Tongan Rugby League Team.

The final became an 8-a-side match after a brawl in the opening minutes of the game led to two players from each team being sent-off. The Tonga women’s rugby league team failed to win a medal despite topping their pool.
