The Minister of Finance, Hon. Lisiate 'Akolo has launched Tonga's biggest ever national budget amounting to T$357.6 million for the 2013-14 financial year, and expressed concern over low returns to government from public enterprises.

John Cauchi, Tonga's former Attorney General, has filed three Causes of Action against the Government of Tonga with the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court claiming over AUD$500,000 in special damages and relief for Breach of Contract, Repudiation of Contract and Constructive Dismissal.

Tonga government officials told a Chinese business delegation that they would review a policy that imposes 15% consumption tax on business investments in Tonga. They also told the potential investors that tourism is "Tonga's most vibrant industry" and that Tonga has fish to give for fishing boats and it will speed up its process of issuing licenses to fish in Tonga's waters.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
MASDAR, Abu Dhabi's multifaceted renewable energy company, signed today (18 January) a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, represented through the Tonga Energy Road Map Implementation Unit (TERM IU). Masdar will be in charge of the implementation and construction of a 500 kW solar photovoltaic power plant to be installed in Vava'u Island. The project, is financed by a grant provided by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), the solar plant will deliver around 13 percent of Tonga's annual electricity demand.

A proposal by Cabinet that would deprive the King in Council of certain powers of appointment has been strongly challenged by the Lord Privy Seal this evening, in a statement that says Cabinet is acting outside of the law in not renewing Police Commissioner Kelley's contract.

Tonga's Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, saying that the Public Servants' Association (PSA) is out of step with its new demands for the extension of the 60, 70, 80% salary rise for two more years and for a political reform to be implemented next year, has warned that civil servants should stay clear of politics.

FROM OUR ARCHIVES: The saying today in Tonga that some people can get away with million dollar day-light robberies, while others may be sent to jail for stealing the neighbour’s chicken, is very true if you look at what has been happening during the past few months. The March parliamentary election has stretched some people’s imaginations to the limit so that they do things that an ordinary bible-carrying, big ta'ovala wearing Tongan would not do, which is simply cheating in order to get a few votes. - Editor's Comment by Pesi Fonua
