Tonga's Cabinet on 20 January 2021 approved a zero rate of Consumption Tax for the services of collection and disposal waste by a government approved waste management entity, the Waste Authority Ltd. However, the savings will not be passed onto the public.

Tonga government officials told a Chinese business delegation that they would review a policy that imposes 15% consumption tax on business investments in Tonga. They also told the potential investors that tourism is "Tonga's most vibrant industry" and that Tonga has fish to give for fishing boats and it will speed up its process of issuing licenses to fish in Tonga's waters.

A private bill aimed at reducing the new consumption tax was rejected by the House after its first reading. Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance won a new Regulation giving the Chief Commissioner discretion to exempt organizations from CT - despite protests that it was illegal.

While Tongan consumers were faced with a new 15% Consumption Tax coming into effect today, April 1, Tongan businesses were not amused by the sudden announcement by their Port Authority of a 25% increase in ports tariffs to take effect on April 4.
They warn that the increase in shipping tariffs will absorb any savings that were to be made from the Consumption Tax introduction.

The Tongan Privy Council on Friday March 4 approved the implementation of Tonga's new Consumption Tax. Later, in the afternoon, the Minister of Finance, Hon. Siosiua ‘Utoikamanu officially launched Tonga's Consumption Tax which will come into force on April 1.
