Tonga's midnight curfew has been eased by to start at 1:00am to 5:00am, as weekly flights to Tonga have increased, since the gradual re-opening of Tonga’s international border on 1 August. Two national State of Emergencies have also been renewed.

Tonga’s Declaration of a Health State of Emergency will enter its second year of enforcement, under a monthly renewal starting from 8:00pm today, February 15 to March 15. This means the State of Emergency has been in force for a full year, since it was first declared on 12 March 2020.

Police have arrested and charged a total of 3,023 people to date, since the start of the Police COVID19 Operation on March 28, when the State of Emergency was declared in Tonga. This included 1,380 arrests for breaches of the National Emergency Lockdown Notice and the Restriction Notice.

Tonga’s State of Emergency that was due to end today at 8:00pm 17 May has been extended until 8.00pm 11 June 2020, the Prime Minister, Hon. Dr Pohiva Tu‘i‘onetoa declared this afternoon 15 May 2020. The night curfew now starts at 10:00pm. Gyms and sporting events are permitted and some other restrictions have been eased, while the border remains closed.

Restrictions enforced under a State of Emergency in Tonga since 17 April will be relaxed for a couple of weeks from 8:00pm May 1-15 2020, the Prime Minister announced yesterday. However, the international border remains closed to incoming passengers, including an estimated 10,000 Tongans overseas who want to return.

Tonga has extended its State of Emergency for another month until May 15, due to the continuous spread of CoViD-19 globally, including Tonga's neighbouring countries the Prime Minister Hon Dr Pohiva Tu’i’onetoa announced this afternoon. Eased national restrictions also come into effect starting at 8:00pm 17 April to 8:00pm 24 April, when they will be reviewed. But the PM also indicated that international airline diversions could last into June.

Tonga has declared a month-long State of Emergency in Tonga aimed at CoViD-19 prevention stating that the disease “is imminent and will endanger or threaten.. the lives of people in Tonga.”. Starting today at 8:00 pm: Foreign nationals are banned from entering Tonga; Tongan nationals must be quarantined for 14-days upon arrival; public gatherings are restricted; big events including funerals are banned; bars will be closed and other measures are being taken.

Initial reports have confirmed no casualties in Vava'u which has escaped major damage to infrastructure, apart from fallen trees due to Tropical Cyclone Ula. A state of emergency issued only for Vava’u and Ha’apai remains in force to be reviewed. While Tonga's climate experts say that a lack of moisture to drive the system prevented it from intensifying into a devastating Category 4 or 5 storm.
