An Australia boxer of Tongan heritage, Justis Huni, has recently won gold at two major world amateur boxing tournaments held in Turkey and Spain. The 18-year-old dominated the super heavyweight divisions (+91kg) of the competitions held this month.

Line fishing and spear fishing enthusiasts competed in an Open Fishing Competition hosted by the Nuku’alofa Fishing Club on Saturday, 19 August, when a spear fisherman caught a 16.2kg Tuna, the heaviest fish, while a kayaking fisherman snatched the top line-fishing prize with an 8.6kg Mahi Mahi.

Veteran 'Ikale Tahi Prop, Taufa'ao Filise, has been signed again by Welsh rugby club, the Cardiff Blues. Filise has played for the Cardiff Blues since 2006, and is the club’s most capped player. He has so far played 241 games for the Blues.

Retired Rugby League Player and Former Mate Ma’a Tonga prop, Richie Fa'aoso, has called for the National Rugby League (NRL) to address a “massive drug problem” in the sport. Fa'aoso, now 33, played in the NRL for 11 years, and retired in 2015.

Valentino Mapapalangi has been signed by a UK club, the Leicester Tigers. The 24-year-old ‘Ikale Tahi back-rower has six caps for Tonga and has played professionally since 2015 for the Manawatu Turbos in New Zealand’s national provincial tournament.

The Flying Fijians narrowly defeated the ‘Ikale Tahi 14 – 10 today in a hard fought match at Teufaiva Stadium. The ‘Ikale Tahi crossed the Fijian try line in extra-time to an uproarious crowd, but jubliation was short-lived as the referee disallowed the try and ordered a 5 metre scrum to Fiji.
