The Tonga Red Cross Society (TRCS), an organization dedicated to helping thousands of vulnerable people in Tonga, now needs a little help itself, to escape increasing floodwaters around the termite-ridden buildings in Nuku'alofa that it has worked in for decades. TRCS Secretary General, Sione Taumoefolau, told Matangi Tonga that they are organizing a fundraising ball on 22 November, to start raising funds toward constructing a new service centre that will cost around $15-16 million.

Tonga’s Queen Mother Halaevalu Mata’aho will be sorely missed by two organisations whose cause was close to her heart. Leaders of the Tonga Red Cross Society Inc. and the Alonga Centre expressed their sorrow at her passing but remembered the Queen Mother's legacy of love, to help and support the elderly and people living with disabilities throughout Tonga.

The Ministry of Infrastructure has stopped the Tonga Red Cross from constructing temporary shelters for families in Ha‘apai after Tropical Cyclone Ian devastated the islands in January. Two houses completed on the island of Mou'unga'one were handed over to affected families this week but the Red Cross had planned to build another 24 to alleviate the suffering.

One person died on LIfuka as Tropical Cyclone Ian Category 5 ripped through the Ha‘apai Islands yesterday afternoon, causing extensive devastation, although the full extent of the impact on the low lying islands is unknown in Tonga's first recorded Category 5 cyclone. In Lifuka most houses were flattened or damaged and people sheltered in the churches and other community buildings.
