Tonga’s Declaration of a Health State of Emergency will enter its second year of enforcement, under a monthly renewal starting from 8:00pm today, February 15 to March 15. This means the State of Emergency has been in force for a full year, since it was first declared on 12 March 2020.

Police have arrested and charged a total of 3,023 people to date, since the start of the Police COVID19 Operation on March 28, when the State of Emergency was declared in Tonga. This included 1,380 arrests for breaches of the National Emergency Lockdown Notice and the Restriction Notice.

Restrictions enforced under a State of Emergency in Tonga since 17 April will be relaxed for a couple of weeks from 8:00pm May 1-15 2020, the Prime Minister announced yesterday. However, the international border remains closed to incoming passengers, including an estimated 10,000 Tongans overseas who want to return.
