Prime Minister Hon. Hu'akavameiliku is leading a delegation to the 9th Our Ocean Conference, which will take place from 16-17 April 2024, in Athens, Greece. The Conference will address cross cutting areas including Sustainable Tourism in coastal areas and islands, reduction of marine plastic and micro-plastic pollution, green shipping, and green transition in the Mediterranean.

A State of the Global Climate report confirms that 2023 is set to be the warmest year on record. Data until the end of October shows that the year was about 1.40 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial levels, delegates at COP28 heard. Tonga's Prime Minister Hon. A new hospital for Vava'u and a new nursing school at Vaiola Hospital in Tongatapu, are two big health initiatives, planned by government under its new budget, the Prime Minister Hon Hu’akavameiliku said today. He expects financial aid from foreign donor partners will help to cover the government's $31 million budget deficit for the financial year.
