An important development in Tonga's criminal justice system, which will allow offenders to carry out Community Service under police supervision, will provide an alternative sentence to a jail term. Community service orders in most cases are imposed on first time offenders and young offenders.

Six male accused, including five Tongan police officers and one detainee, have each been charged with manslaughter at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court this afternoon, and were expected to be released on bail later today, September 27. The three police officers who were arrested today included the supervising officer identified as Inspector Kelepi Hala'ufia, with the two police constables named as Manu Tu'ivai and Tevita Vakalahi.

Magistrate Pita Soakimi this morning queried why only one civilian, Semisi Kalisitiane Manu, was charged with the new count of murder in relation to the death of New Zealand policeman Kali Fungavaka who was injured while in Police custody, while two policemen have not been similarly charged.

I was shocked and saddened to read the news that a New Zealand Police Officer has died after an incident in the Police cells at Nuku'alofa Police Station. I cannot comment on the specific facts of the case but it does raise real concerns about progress within the law and justice sector in Tonga. - Chris Kelley, Tonga's Former Police Commissioner.

My house was robbed last year in November with goods worth over $20,000 stolen. Three months later (this year), a further break-in occurred. With utter frustration and annoyance, I arrived at the Police station angrily demanding a response. - 'Amelia 'Ofakineiafu.
