Following a search by Customs in Savusavu of a New Zealand based yacht, the Captain and two crew-members are now in Police Custody, Fiji Revenue and Customs reported today. Local border agencies and Customs are working with partners in New Zealand and Australia to expose and prosecute smuggling attempts.

Four Tongans are among seven fisherman whose bodies have been recovered after their vessel capsized in New Zealand's Kaipara Harbour yesterday. Two have been identified as Tongan cousins Alipate 'Pate' Manumu'a and Sunia 'Junior' Onga'unga, in their 30s, both were fathers.

Six male accused, including five Tongan police officers and one detainee, have each been charged with manslaughter at the Nuku'alofa Magistrate's Court this afternoon, and were expected to be released on bail later today, September 27. The three police officers who were arrested today included the supervising officer identified as Inspector Kelepi Hala'ufia, with the two police constables named as Manu Tu'ivai and Tevita Vakalahi.

I was shocked and saddened to read the news that a New Zealand Police Officer has died after an incident in the Police cells at Nuku'alofa Police Station.
