The local tourism industry that was hit hard with the closure of Tonga's international borders in 2020 is looking for revival. The first cruise ship Paul Gauguin, is scheduled to arrive on 3 October in Nuku'alofa, with a total of eight cruise ships listed for the rest of the year.

Pacific Island countries, including Tonga, are being offered 12 fully-funded scholarships under an Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP) that opened mid-September. Hosted by the University of the South Pacific (USP), this first set of scholarships will focus on tackling marine pollution.

A new studio building for Tonga Broadcasting Commission was commissioned by Crown Prince Tupouto'a 'Ulukalala, on the completion of a Nationwide Early Warning System Project (NEWS) on Tuesday, at Fasi-moe-Afi. The NEWS project, worth about USD30 million in total, funded by Japan, will strengthen Tonga’s capacity for risk management and its resilience against disasters through the improvement of three systems: Emergency Radio Communication System, Early Warning Sound Alert System and Medium Wave Radio Broadcasting System.
