Pacific Games plaintiffs who are trying to sue the Kingdom of Tonga for multi-million pa'anga damages over its cancelling of the Pacific Games hosting in 2019, have been given leave to amend their claims, after the Chief Justice found their statement of claim was seriously defective. The defendant, the Kingdom of Tonga, had applied to strike out / or stay the plaintiffs claims.

November 2 is the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Kingdom of Tonga. It is of great significance to jointly celebrate this historic day. On October 26, 1998, His Majesty King Tupou VI, who was then Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defence of Tonga visited China, and on behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga, signed the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations with his counterpart in the Chinese Government. Tongasat unlawfully received over USD$46 million of public money gained from the government's relinquishing of Tonga's 130 degrees East satellite slot to China, a Supreme Court action has determined, in decision over a public law claim that covers negotiations and dealings going back to 2006.

The Supreme Court has ruled in favour of an application by the Public Service Association and ‘Akilisi Pohiva to recover further documents from defendants, Kingdom of Tonga and Tongasat, in an ongoing legal proceeding, in which they essentially claimed the unlawful payment of millions to Tongasat, for the use of orbital slots by a Chinese company.

Tonga and China will celebrate the 15th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on November 2, while looking forward to continuing development assistance along with opportunities for Chinese enterprises to invest in Tonga. China has also expressed an interest in closer coordination and cooperation with Tonga in international and regional affairs, according to a statement from the Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Wang Donghua.
