Virtually all public figures in Tonga, including politicians of any colour, failed dismally to assist or set forward a firm plan of how to achieve better standard of living for Tongans. It was mainly the late King who had a vision to that effect, starting from the Tonga Commodities Board in the late 1950s. The last was the Passport Scheme, a fund raising excercise for the purpose of investing the proceeds. - S. Ma'afu Tupou.

My personal opinion is that in 1952 Prince Tupouto'a-Tungï (then Premier of Tonga) arranged for the purchase of the property by the Government of Tonga and that Queen Sālote agreed to the purchase because of her growing family – and the likelihood of grandchildren later being educated in Auckland, as she had been – and because of the promised hostels for Tongan students, in whose welfare she took a great interest. - Besi Wood-Ellem.

Thank you for keeping us in the picture over the last few weeks. We continue to be in awe of what is possible today and your efforts at keeping us informed has helped to shape the thinking behind this short note. That we are revelling in the wonders of a world we never thought we would see in our lifetime was brought home to me even more when I was able to watch the three-hour formal burial ceremony of the late king at Mala'ekula from the comfort of an air-conditioned Auckland office , while thinking back to 1965 when I too, was at the same place and at a similar ceremony. - Sefita A Hao'uli

I wanted to share with you my first meeting with the late King of Tonga. I was so humbled to see the King come out to meet the Tongan community in his pajamas and slippers. He actually met and shook the hands of everyone that was present there, all the children and adults, some 50 people altogether. I will forever remember this occasion because it showed what humility and simplicity meant. -Dr. Henry Ivarature

I was first appalled and outraged by the very insensitive and disrespectful remarks by Mr. Laws concerning our beloved Monarch His Late Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. However, I now find it rather amusing how Mr. Laws has exposed his ignorance and bigotry for all to see.

When Taufa'ahau Tupou IV came to the Tongan throne on July 4, 1967, for most Tongans it was the dawn of a new era. The new king, at 49, epitomised what Tongans of the 1960s perceived to be a perfect 20th century monarch. Editor's Comment, by Pesi Fonua.
