An Electricity Tariff increase came into effect from 1 April 2022. The Competent Authority has approved an increase in the regulated price of diesel effective 18 March 2022. The Electricity Commission has approved the government's 'Lifeline Tariff Discount Scheme' effective for the power consumption from 1 July 2021. The discounted tariff of 7.67 seniti/kWh is to apply to the regulated tariff of 80.71 seniti/kWh, only to the power customers consumed between 0-100 kWh/month, to maintain the electricity tariff at 73.04 seniti/kWh. The Electricity Commission has approved the new power tariff of 72.11 seniti/kWh or a 2.12 seniti increase per kWh effective for the power consumption from 1st July 2016. The 2.12 seniti/kWh is an increase in the fuel tariff component for the price of electricity. This is due to the increase in the price of diesel which has gone up by 16 seniti since February 2016 as advised by the Competent Authority.

Tonga’s current electricity tariffs will be cut by 11% on meter readings from 1 March, bringing tariffs down to 69.99 seniti per unit - the lowest since 2008, the CEO of Tonga Power Ltd., Robert Matthews, announced on 25 February, and the benefits will be passed on to all electricity consumers in Tongatapu, Vava’u, ‘Eua and Ha’apai.
