Methamphetamine, criminal deportees and outlaw motorcycle gangs are the three main threats in policing the Pacific Region according to a 2016 Transnational Organised Crime Assessment. While some 35 criminal deportees are returned to Tonga every year, Tonga Police revealed today that it is the gravity of their reoffending that concerns law enforcement because some criminal deportees have killed again.

Corruption is rife in the Asia Pacific region says Transparency International in a recent report revealing just over one in four people living in 16 countries surveyed in the area are estimated to have paid a bribe to access public services. The report did not include Tonga or any other Pacific Island nation, but focused on larger economies in Asia with Australia the only nation in the Pacific region included.

‘Alani Afu, otherwise known as ‘Alani Koloamatangi, who has been in custody for extradition to Australia to face a charge of murder, which he allegedly committed some 26-years ago had his appeal dismissed by Tonga’s Court of Appeal on 14 September. His appeal was against the dismissal by a Supreme Court judge of his application for a writ of habeas corpus.
