Ten power lines workers and two support staff from Australia have joined forces with Tonga Power Ltd staff to quickly restore power to homes and businesses on Tongatapu and ‘Eua. The extra help will ease the workload of Tonga Power staff who have been working tirelessly to get the electricity network up and running since Cyclone Gita struck last week.

It is 14 years since the Howard government launched its own Foreign Affairs and Trade White Paper in 2003, although the Gillard government produced the 'Australia in the Asian Century White Paper' in 2013. Methamphetamine, criminal deportees and outlaw motorcycle gangs are the three main threats in policing the Pacific Region according to a 2016 Transnational Organised Crime Assessment. While some 35 criminal deportees are returned to Tonga every year, Tonga Police revealed today that it is the gravity of their reoffending that concerns law enforcement because some criminal deportees have killed again.

The report did not include Tonga or any other Pacific Island nation, but focused on larger economies in Asia with Australia the only nation in the Pacific region included.
