The University of Sydney will be hosting a five day Pacific Studies conference from 22-26 April, 2014 that will look at action and adaption to climate change, and Australia’s role in the Pacific, among other topics. Senior Curator of Sydney University’s Macleay Museum and Conference Co-Convenor Jude Philp said the conference is an important way to draw attention to the need in Australia for more knowledge about the Pacific region.

Australia may have won the Rugby League World Cup but Tonga has a faster Luger. Tonga’s first winter Olympian, Bruno Banani beat Australia’s Alexander Ferlazzo to 32nd place in the Luge Men’s Singles at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games and was ahead of Ferlazzo by only less than half a second.

Three Tongans have been deported from New Zealand while another person left voluntarily as a result of their criminal records being wiped-off by Tonga Police. Australia has also cancelled the visas of three Tongans while a fourth visa is being considered for cancellation. Meanwhile, the Tonga Police are continuing to investigate a practice that the Police Commissioner said had damaged Tonga's reputation because official documents with the police letterhead were sent telling a lie to gain access to another country.

The World Bank and the Government of Tonga today signed a US$2.9 million grant agreement to implement the Tonga Energy Road Map, which will improve the access, efficiency and cost of energy for Tonga’s 104,000 people. The Government of Australia, through the Pacific Region Infrastructure Facility, is contributing US$2.5 million of the total grant, according to a press statement by the World Bank today.
