I have a soft spot for the people of Mango. After Hurricane Isaac in March 1982, I flew in a New Zealand helicopter to Mango as part of a reconnaissance mission. It was a Sunday morning and we landed on the beach next to the church. All but one person on the island were in church and although the sound of the helicopter landing next to the church would have been deafening, not one person came out to inquire what was happening. While we waited, the engineer fixed an outboard motor that was not working. When the church service ended, the people streamed out and stood around the strange machine. The children were trying to work out whether or not it was a spaceship. After some discussion, they concluded it was a helicopter. But nothing like that had ever visited Mango before that day.
