Queen Nanasipau’u today presented a gift of a new truck to the evacuated people of Mango for transport, when they re-settle at Ta'anga in 'Eua.

Bank of South Pacific Tonga Limited celebrated seven years serving the Kingdom of Tonga, on Sunday 10 July 2022. To celebrate the occasion BSP presented Tonga Red Cross Society with a donation of $10,000 and other goods, while a donation of $2,500 was made to Community Leaders of Mango to support relocation to ‘Eua. This was in addition to the $50,000 donation made to the Government of Tonga earlier in the year to support tsunami reconstruction.

King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u are leading a ‘Paletu’a Project’ to build a new neighbourhood near Matatoa for the resettlement of hundreds of Kanokupolu people whose homes were destroyed by the Hunga tsunamis in January. Newly released plans estimate the development will about $24 million pa'anga, to be raised from various sources, including donor funding. While Mango islanders' will be resettled to Ta'anga in 'Eua.

Table Tennis is providing a powerful distraction for the youth among the most affected by the volcanic eruptions and tsunamis, which devastated homes on the islands of Mango and ‘Atata. The trauma of their recent experiences will no doubt remain with the displaced communities for a long time to come – but, in the meantime, the smiles of joy on the children’s faces as they play table tennis brings happiness in these difficult times.

Sixty two survivors, including about 18 children and babies, evacuated from Mango Island, Ha'apai Group, were brought to Tongatapu on Saturday Jan. 22 by a Tongan navy patrol boat. Two Tonga Red Cross trauma counsellors were meeting the families and talking to them after their extraordinary ordeal. The community leaders have shared their stories of survival.
