Nuku’alofa, 11 June 2026 – The Tonga Energy Commission has approved an increase in the electricity tariff from 1 June 2026, from 121.63 to 125.02 seniti per kilowatt-hour (seniti/kWh), a rise of 2.8%. The increase follows a 7.2% rise in the June wholesale price of diesel for power generation, as the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to push global fuel prices higher.

The Commission did not take this decision lightly. It understands the pressure that higher electricity costs place on households and businesses across Tonga. Its role is to make sure the tariff reflects the actual, verified cost of fuel, and no more.

Diesel fuel remains the dominant source of electricity generation in Tonga, still meeting around two-thirds of demand even as renewable generation has grown in recent years. When the diesel price rises, the cost of generating electricity rises with it, and that cost falls directly on Tonga Power Limited (TPL). The June price increase has added significantly to TPL's fuel costs.
