The Tonga Geological Service is finding itself in a helpless situation with no offshore dredger, and sand mining from Tongatapu’s beautiful beaches becoming an issue. Construction demands have stripped sand from many beaches on the island, and now the best Sunset Coast beaches are being ravaged by sand miners.

Mining beaches will have serious long term physical and economic impacts. This is not only a localized beach issue. Sand mining interrupts long shore sediment (sand) drift critical to maintaining beaches and other shoreline areas not being actively mined. Why not manufacture sand in local quarries? Too expensive? What is too expensive in terms of geological consequences not to mention, as Shane Egan has pointed out, recreational and tourism aesthetics, is mining beaches.
