The Tonga Geological Service is finding itself in a helpless situation with no offshore dredger, and sand mining from Tongatapu’s beautiful beaches becoming an issue. Construction demands have stripped sand from many beaches on the island, and now the best Sunset Coast beaches are being ravaged by sand miners.

An additional US$10 million has been approved by the World Bank to help Tonga continue recovering from Tropical Cyclone Gita that struck Tongatapu and ‘Eua causing widespread damage in February. TC Gita, a category 4 storm, is the strongest cyclone to severely impact Tonga since 1982.
