Industrialization of Tonga
Industrialization of Tonga would indeed be a wonderful thing but does she have the natural resources? Some years back the government operated what was then known as the "Small Industries" at Maufanga there was a knitting factory that was producing clothing and exported overseas. The problem here is that all materials were imported so when sold overseas it was no cheaper and sometimes more expensive than the same product produced in those countries. Another example, there was a factory producing toilet papers, because paper had to be imported the rolls were so small but more expensive than the bigger toilet papers ordered from overseas. One is not trying to dissuade anybody if they want to set up an industry in Tonga, that's a great idea. Go back a number of years and we see Havelu the desiccated coconut factory was working 24/6 year round, than went belly up?... Plus Tongatapu cannot keep up with the demand for ripe coconuts to feed the factory. Shipping of copra to overseas market soon died out too because of coconut trees age, it was not producing as much nuts as it should. Tonga at one time had it good then all went from bad to worse now nothing, people are unemployed and we know the rest. Minister if you could kick start your vision then do so, I'm sure you've gone through every aspect pertaining to setting up industries in Tonga. For Tonga, industrialization should include the whole of Tonga not just Tongatapu only. Could this new venture fare better than the one before?
