Tonga's Prime Minister Hon ‘Akilisi Pohiva has, in an abrupt turnaround, said in a radio interview today that Tonga will not host the Pacific Games 2019. His statement comes just days after confirming last week that the games were on.

Tongan-raised Pita Taumoepenu of Pea, has been drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. He is among three football players of Tongan descent who were selected in the 2017 NFL Draft on April 27 – 29. The two others are Stevie Tuikolovatu from Utah and Sam Tevi from Texas.

The government of China has agreed to fund a $55 million sports complex at Tonga High School for the 2019 Pacific Games after signing an implementation agreement with the Tonga government last week. Preparatory works are scheduled for August 2017 with construction expected to start in October 2017 and be completed by May 2019.

Junior tennis players representing Tonga are currently competing at the East Pacific Regional Championships at the Scarbro Tennis Centre in Auckland, New Zealand, which runs from 10-15 April. National Coach and Team Manager, Mr Iasinito Hausia said the junior team is ranked 10th out of 21 members in the Oceania Region.
