An award ceremony at the Tonga Police Headquarters on September 2 marked the retirement of two officers, the Fire Chief and the Deputy Fire Chief who have been in the service for 30 years. Visiting Tonga and attending the ceremony were the Chiefs of Police from the Pacific Islands.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in program on Family Values presented the first Family Values Awards to three model Tongan families on September 2 at Liahona High School, Tongatapu. The awards were presented to Dr Viliami Puloka and his wife Dr 'Aivi Puloka; the President of the Free Church of Tonga, Rev. Semisi Fonua and family; and Dr Viliami Tangi and family.

A tornado struck the centre of the village of Ha'alalo in central Tongatapu on Saturday, August 21, blowing off the roof of the village hall, destroying a home with a family inside, hitting a primary school, knocking out the local kava club house, and damaging trees.

On a four-day stop over in Nuku'alofa, the Commander, and the 172 officers and sailors of the Australian HMAS Parramatta welcomed local people aboard on their first evening in port, June 14 for a cocktail reception which ended with a Ceremonial Sunset and the lowering of the Australian flag.
