The Emergency Powers (Public Safety and Public Security) Regulations 2008 renewed for 30 days on December 19, 2008 stands to expire on Saturday, January 17.

The Tongan government on Friday December 19 extended the Emergency Powers (Public Safety and Public Security) Regulations 2008 to January 3.

The Tonga Government will officially close down for ten days for its Christmas and New Year holidays, from December 23 to January 1.

The Attorney General and the Minister of Justice, Hon. 'Alisi Taumoepeau yesterday announced the appointment of Neil Adsett as Tonga's first Acting Anti-Corruption Commissioner.

The Tonga government is proposing to foot the bill for some community services that are provided by Public Enterprises, to help make them more viable businesses, and may subsidise services such as ferries to remote islands, and water for putting out fires.

A new formula for calculating customs duty on imported vehicles, based on the size of the engine, will encourage people in Tonga to buy newer vehicles, the government hopes.
