Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding was taught to students at GPS Hofoa today who made folded shapes of a helmet, a heart and a balloon. Origami encourages students to concentrate and focus, said Tamada Iku, cultural and education officer at the Embassy of Japan in Tonga.

Renown Hawaii based Tongan Master Carver, Tu'ione Pulotu, has carved a massive Tongan tiki - at over 4.5 metres tall, probably the biggest in the country, which will be displayed at the Nuku'alofa Tanoa Hotel. He's looking forward to returning to Hawaii next week after carving over 100 canoes in Tonga since the border shut in March last year. By Eleanor Gee.

Thirteen-year-old 'Oto'ota Fahina Likiliki has been selected from Tonga to sing in a virtual Commonwealth musical collaboration “for healing the human spirit during CoViD-19”. The musical project will combine 54 voices chosen from 54 Commonwealth member countries, to virtually record a soundtrack with the Dionysus Ensemble in Britain.

A Wesley College student (Year 13), Sione Teutau, has won the Best Actor award for Auckland South and East, in a national drama festival, for playing a nurse in a short performance of a scene from ‘Romeo and Juliet’, The judge said that Sione's nurse was played confidently and with a delightful sense of fun and comic timing, and in homage to Shakespeare’s original male actors.

Australian photographer, Jasmine Carey has won USD$120,000 in the HIPA International Photography Award for her amazing photo of a humpback whale mother sleeping beside her two-week-old calf, in Vava’u, Tonga. The rich award attracts photographic entries from all over the world. Jasmine's winning image on the theme ‘Water’ has gained worldwide publicity, raising Tonga’s profile for whale watching and swimming activities. By Eleanor Gee.

Maori actor and director Taika Waititi (44), won an academy award for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 92nd Academy Awards for his movie “Jojo Rabbit” on Sunday, 9 February. Waititi beat five nominees to win the award, which included screenplays for movies such as Joker and The Irishman.
