The West and its Western media need to be educated on some aspects of Tongan culture so they can be enlightened regarding our rituals and the relationship of Tongans with their beloved King. It is rude and highly inappropriate that during our time of mourning, offensive articles and news by some Western newspapers, radio personalities and television are mocking the late King and His Majesty Tupou V. - Loketi Niua Latu

It is only now that He has gone that I look back and realize how much He has done for Tonga and us his peoples. Like thousands of my contemporaries, we were all brought up in a great schooling system. - Finau Fonua

I was first appalled and outraged by the very insensitive and disrespectful remarks by Mr. Laws concerning our beloved Monarch His Late Majesty King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. However, I now find it rather amusing how Mr. Laws has exposed his ignorance and bigotry for all to see.

I wish the people of Wanganui the best of luck for they have elected Michael Laws as their leader, a man who makes great pronouncements out of ignorance. His comparison of our late King to Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe clearly shows that he does not know what he is talking about. - Uili Fukofuka

When Taufa'ahau Tupou IV came to the Tongan throne on July 4, 1967, for most Tongans it was the dawn of a new era. The new king, at 49, epitomised what Tongans of the 1960s perceived to be a perfect 20th century monarch. Editor's Comment, by Pesi Fonua.
