A leading police officer, Acting Deputy Commissioner Sālote Grewe Tonga (61) who retired after 42-years of service with Tonga Police, was farewelled in a parade on Friday, 8 July and lauded for her strong character and deep values that made her a role model in her career. "Sālote treated everyone from all walks of life with respect," said Commissioner Stephen Caldwell.

In a decision on Friday, Tonga's Cabinet turned down a Petition by the Public Service Association to defer the implementation of a new civil service salary structure from 1 July 2016 to 1 January 2017. A move to increase the salary of the Prime Minister to $100,000 per annum was also deferred.
