The Pacific Games Council CEO Laurent Cassier, told Matangi Tonga this evening that “as far as we are concerned the projects are still ongoing”. The Pacific Games Council has not received any confirmation from the Tongan Government regarding the cancellation of their hosting of the 2019 Pacific Games as stated by Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva during a radio interview in New Zealand two days ago.

The Tonga government does not have the right to cancel hosting the 2019 Pacific Games, said Lord Sevele, chairman and CEO of the 2019 Pacific Games Organising Committee. “It is a prerogative of the Tonga Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee TASANOC and the Pacific Games Council, not Government (Tongan Government),” he told Matangi Tonga today.

Petroleum prices will increase starting tomorrow, 16 May 2017 as approved by the Tonga Competent Authority for May – June 2016. The retail prices of petrol, diesel and kerosene will increase by 5.60 seniti/litre, 3.64 seniti/litre and 4.54 seniti/litre respectively.

Utah Police have arrested Sione Vaitai (26), of Tongan descent, who has been on the run from Police since Friday after he allegedly stabbed his Father and Sister with a kitchen knife at their home in Sandy City, Utah. The victims were taken to hospital in critical condition but are now stabilized.

Tevita Vaka (28) is serving an accumulative sentence of 12-years imprisonment for a series of violent robberies in 2015-16 in Nuku'alofa. A Supreme Court judge who viewed "the callous, ruthless nature of the offending" said this was a deterrent sentence to protect people from being the victims of predatory criminal acts in their homes.
