Tonga's Fekita ‘Utoikamanu is a member of the jury for the Island Innovation Awards, an international initiative that is calling for applications in 12 award categories. The awards are focused on celebrating excellence in sustainability and are hosted by Island Innovation, in partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative. Applications are open until November 5, for projects in island communities. There are no monetary awards but the initiative aims to provide global exposure for projects that drive positive change.

After a trial at the Nuku'alofa Supreme Court, Siu ‘i Vahanoa Tu’ipulotu (48) was found guilty of serious housebreaking and robbery at a store in Ma'ufanga, where he punched the complainant several times, before stealing goods. He will be sentenced on November 18.

HM Queen Elizabeth II, as Head of the Commonwealth, on 15 October, recognised Taufu’i as the 199th Commonwealth Point of Light. The award recognises one inspirational volunteer each week from across the 54 Commonwealth countries.

‘Okusitino Langi (47) who has an extensive criminal history, was sentenced today to six-years three-months imprisonment for possession of substantial illicit drugs, including 43.85 grams of methamphetamine at Hala’ovave. The prosecution said the amount of methamphetamine seized was substantial, 
the dealer bags and other drug-related utensils and cash found indicated a commercial enterprise.

This year’s worldwide mountain of waste electronic and electrical equipment will total an estimated 57.4 million tonnes – greater than the weight of the Great Wall of China, the world’s heaviest artificial object, said the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Forum (WEEE), on International E-Waste Day, yesterday. By weight discarded big appliances such as stoves and refrigerators constitute the largest component or e-waste. These large appliances contain steel, copper and aluminium.

Tonga is returning 10,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines to COVAX today so they can be given to Vietnam before the expiry date. The Ministry of Health is disappointed that unvaccinated people have been slow to take up these doses. So far less than 30% of the total population has been vaccinated. The ministry said it is not easy to get the vaccines and now they are trying to get more. Around 31,600 doses of the Pfizer vaccine will arrive in Tonga next week but these are for 12 to 17-year-olds and pregnant women.

The women’s sevens Vahe Hihifo Warriors team and the Men’s 15-a-side Vahe Kolo Cruise team collected their prize money at the Nuku’alofa Club last night, October 11, after winning their respective competitions in the Centenary Tournament last Saturday. The winning teams collected $10,000 in prize money and there were also prizes for the remaining teams. Tonga Rugby Union CEO Peter Harding said; "We saw very very good rugby.”
