Heads of Customs in the Pacific, including Tonga, have agreed that they need to work together with national security to ensure the region is more secure from transnational crimes. Despite border closures because of COVID-19, they say threats in the Pacific remain high from illegal activities, which are often facilitated by trusted insiders.

Over 27,458 people over the age of 18 years in Tonga, have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, since the second dose roll out program started on June 24 in Nuku'alofa, the Ministry of Health confirmed today, 10 September. This represents 43% of the targeted population of 63,128 aged over 18.

Tonga's Ministry of Health today urged those aged 18 – 29 years to get their COVID-19 vaccinations, after it was revealed the age group had the lowest inoculation rate at 38% compared to older people. The Minister said they needed to speed up the vaccinations in order to resume the repatriations to Tonga. “The return of these people depends on how good our vaccination rate is. And if we take it slow just because no one here has the virus, they will continue to suffer.”

The Tonga Government said today it is supporting Tongan nationals who remained stranded in Fiji, after Tonga closed its borders to repatriation flights from Fiji. It was responding to complaints from the group. They are among 2,608 Tongan nationals and residents who are stranded overseas by the suspension of repatriation flights to Tonga from COVID-19 affected countries.

"Our challenges are quite unique in the sense that we are in charge of monitoring the atmosphere and the ocean in a very large area of mostly ocean," he said.

A man who stole over $20,000 worth of goods from his employer in Nuku'alofa, was sentenced to three-years six-months imprisonment for serious housebreaking and theft. However, because he was a young first offender and had pleaded guilty, the judge showed leniency and suspended the sentence for three years.
