Tonga’s Minister of Education, the Prime Minister Hon. ‘Akilisi Pohiva, faced a crisis this week in his move to discard 12 years of development in the national examination system in order to revert to an earlier simpler method called “Raw Marks”. He told a noisy meeting at the Tonga Institute of Education at Pahu on 14 October that Tongan schools will hand out two sets of examination results at the end of the 2015 school year. A close inspection of traditional pre-war rituals reveal a chant or act of some description designed to inspire bravery and valour on the battlefield. I would much rather see two teams perform something deep and meaningful than to witness another attempt to mock a culture. That is the challenge that lies ahead and perhaps when the next Rugby World Cup is held in Japan we might also celebrate the diversity of cultures that contribute towards the game that is rugby. – Malcolm Mulholland.

By allowing a government body to decide what a society is able to view online borders on a society being closely monitored and eventually censored. ...Regulating internet content using filtering technologies and administered by a single government body not only provides a false sense of security but the potential to evolve into full censorship is a concern that should not be ignored. ...The focus should be on education and empowerment to ensure parents and children are safe online rather than a government legislated filter. - Anthony Tuipeatau

I urge the Tongan media community to raise their voices against this unconstitutional law, and thus suppress our free speech rights. Lawmakers are hiding behind the vulnerability of our children to propose laws, which will take away our free speech rights under the constitution. – Sione Mokofisi.
