A large fruit-eating bird from Tonga joins the dodo in the line-up of giant island pigeons hunted to extinction. New research into fossils shows that ‘Tongoenas burleyi’, a newly described genus and species, inhabited the Pacific islands for at least 60,000 years, but vanished within a century or two of human arrival around 2,850 years ago. The size of a large duck, ‘T. burleyi’ was likely capable of swallowing fruit as big as a tennis ball, said study lead author David Steadman.

The Pacific region, including Tonga, is requesting access to a vaccine currently being developed to fight COVID-19, said the Minister for Health Hon ‘Amelia Tu’ipulotu today. They are talking to the World Health Organisation and taking part in preliminary discussions with the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access (COVAX) Facility and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance. It is hoped that by the end of 2021 there will be enough vaccine to immunise 20% of the population, starting with front line workers.

One received a suspended sentence, while the other was placed on a good behaviour bond. The Chief Justice warned if they continued to live a lifestyle or associate with others that might tempt them to use drugs again, they should “just look at their children and think what it would be to lose them.”
