Majuro, Marshall Islands
A proposal to decarbonise the shipping sector by 2050, was submitted by the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, and the Solomon Islands to the UN’s International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the body responsible for regulating international shipping. Tonga’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom supported the proposal.

Professional golfer, Tony Finau, who is of Tongan heritage, won the PGA Tour’s Northern Trust Open on Monday, 23 August, surpassing world no.1 Jon Rahm who was leading on Saturday, and beating Cameron Smith in a playoff in Jersey City, New Jersey. The win is Tony’s first since he took out the 2016 Puerto Rico Open, and he now leads after the first of three events in the FedExCup Playoffs.

A consignment of 36,800 AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses, funded by Japan, and provided by COVAX, arrived in Tonga on an AIr New Zealand cargo flight last night, 25 August. "While I sincerely hope that Tonga could maintain its COVID-free society, after fully getting vaccinated, we will have to reconsider our border restrictions so that we could get along with other countries," said the Japanese ambassador to Tonga.

The Whole House Committee of the Tongan Parliament this evening, 25 August, passed two public health bills that aim to give the Ministry of Health, under certain conditions, the power to declare that vaccinations are compulsory. Renown Hawaii based Tongan Master Carver, Tu'ione Pulotu, has carved a massive Tongan tiki - at over 4.5 metres tall, probably the biggest in the country, which will be displayed at the Nuku'alofa Tanoa Hotel.
