Tonga has reasserted its commitment to protecting marine life and advocating for the legal and ethical recognition of whales as fellow beings of the ocean, to mark World Oceans Day. HRH Princess Angelika Latufuipeka Tuku’aho represented the kingdom at the Launch of “I’m a Person Too” Campaign at UNESCO Ocean Literacy Pavilion in Nice, France yesterday, 9 June.

Tonga’s Marine Atlas was launched to commemorate World Ocean’s Day under the theme ‘The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” (Ko e Oseni- hono ngaahi me’a mo’ui pea koe ma’u’anga mo’ui) by Minister for Environment (MEIDECC), Hon Poasi Tei, at an official event on June 8 at Davina House in Ma’ufanga.

Pacific people are urged to be part of the Wave for Change social media campaign and commit to activities to protect the ocean from threats such as climate change, ocean acidification, marine pollution and overfishing as part of World Oceans Day today, 8 June. SPREP says the ocean needs to be protected from threats such as climate change, ocean acidification, marine pollution and overfishing as it plays a vital role covering 98% of the Pacific region that consists of only 2% of land area.
