In a New Year's pep talk Tonga's Prime Minister told the civil service that Government reform is on the cards in 2019, even though some returning scholars do not want to implement reforms. The PM promised there would be in-house training to address what he believed was "a mindset problem”. He also urged the well-educated, unmarried women in his office to look for husbands.

But that could soon change, thanks to a case brought to the UN by two Tanzanian widows who were dispossessed of their homes by discriminatory inheritance laws. Tanzania and countries in similar situations must demonstrate their commitment to women’s rights by eliminating systematic discrimination. By Tzili Mor.

Because the clean-energy industry is so new, it could help draw women into non-traditional higher-paid jobs like engineering. Enabling all citizens to meet their economic potential – will require active efforts to promote women’s social and political inclusion.
