Results for volcanic activity

Tofua volcano activity continues with an increase in the number of daily events, from 6 events to 12 events, in the latest report by Tonga Geological Services issued at 6:30 am this morning, 9 May. Fluctuations in the ground thermal levels are currently low and approaching normal thermal levels in the last 24 hours.

The aviation community was issued a Yellow ACC alert to be vigilant today while magmatic activities on Tofua volcano are continuing. There were a total of 13 events recorded over the last 24 hours, additional to the seven events in the previous report, the Tonga Geological Services, reported today, 3 May.

One more volcanic eruption was detected in the past 24 hours from Home Reef and prior to this were five eruptions, Tonga Geological Services reported today. Home reef is located soutwest of late Island in the Vava’u Group and mariners are still required to remain at least 4km away from the area.

The aviation alert level for Tonga's Home Reef volcanic activity, was elevated to orange on October 5 and 6 as progressive volcanic activity continued into its 25th day, with one ash eruption.

Volcanic activity with white steam coming out of an area about 20km southwest of Late Island in Vava'u was spotted by a Real Tonga Airline pilot on Monday, February 9.

All international flights in and out of Tonga were cancelled starting yesterday Monday, 12 January due to rising ash coming from the volcanic activity, which is continuing from a sumbmarine vent close to Hunga Ha’apai to the north west of Tonga that has spread over hundreds of kilometers in the atmosphere above the Tongatapu region. .
