Tofua volcano activity continues with an increase in the number of daily events, from 6 events to 12 events, in the latest report by Tonga Geological Services issued at 6:30 am this morning, 9 May. Fluctuations in the ground thermal levels are currently low and approaching normal thermal levels in the last 24 hours.

Six volcanic eruptions were detected from active Home Reef volcano in the last 24 hours, and volcanic ash was observed by satellites, Tonga Geological Services reported today, advising the Aviation Community. “to maintain vigilance and take caution when flying near Home Reef airspace.”

One more volcanic eruption was detected in the past 24 hours from Home Reef and prior to this were five eruptions, Tonga Geological Services reported today. Home reef is located soutwest of late Island in the Vava’u Group and mariners are still required to remain at least 4km away from the area.

There is no immediate threat or warning associated with the Tofua volcano and although the ongoing steam eruption is considered a normal occurrence. The localized volcanic activity is being closely monitored by the Tonga Geological Services.

All domestic flights except those to ‘Eua were cancelled today, while an Air New Zealand flight that left Auckland for Tonga this morning was diverted back to Auckland, due to the continuing volcanic eruption in Hunga, Ha‘apai to the north west of Nuku'alofa.

All international flights in and out of Tonga were cancelled starting yesterday Monday, 12 January due to rising ash coming from the volcanic activity, which is continuing from a sumbmarine vent close to Hunga Ha’apai to the north west of Tonga that has spread over hundreds of kilometers in the atmosphere above the Tongatapu region. .
