Tonga has stepped up its efforts to curb domestic violence with a new ‘Access to Justice Project’ legal centre launched last Friday, 8 December, that will provide free legal advice and support to survivors, as complaints of domestic violence continue to rise. It is the first in the Pacific Islands.

Violence, intimidation, control and isolation are being used against women in Tonga by some husbands who are seeking to gain "coercive control". Examples of some of the coercive control situations and real cases in Tonga included a man beating up his wife causing injuries to prevent her from going to an event, locking her up in a room when he leaves the house, calling her "ugly and stupid" or threatening her via text messaging.

Tonga marked White Ribbon Day to stop violence against women with the Ministry of Police holding a free breakfast and entertainment for children and their families this morning, followed by a march by activists through Nuku’alofa this afternoon, at the start of a 16 day campaign to reach out to men.
