In a first global ranking on how effectively children can use the courts to defend their rights, Tonga was ranked 165 out 197 countries worldwide, a low standing attributed to not having a separate juvenile court or system for children and limited implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In the report released on 15 February, war-torn countries like Syria, Serbia and Cameroon were ranked higher than Tonga.

Tonga, for the first time, planned to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) and the 16th anniversary for Tonga’s membership of the United Nations, which it joined in 1999, with an event at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre today. Officially, UN day is 24 October.
